2023 Department of Pediatrics Academic Annual Report

Safety for returning to drive in adolescents who have received a mild traumatic brain injury: (Co-Is: Drew Davis, M.D., Erin Swanson-Kimani, M.D.): This study, in collaboration with the UAB Translational Research for Injury Prevention Laboratory (TRIP Lab), is funded by an NHI R01 grant. The study is at the forefront of efforts nationally to learn more about the serious consequences of mild traumatic brain injury and aims to assess the impact of mild traumatic brain injury on driving performance and provide guidance for safe return to driving. Feasibility of a new frame runner to support exercise for individuals with disabilities (Co-I: Cynthia Wozow, M.D.): This study is taking place as part of the UAB Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Recreational, Sport and Exercise Technologies for People with Disabilities, an NIDDILRR Rehabilitation Research Center. One of the five focus areas of the grant is to design low-cost recreational and competitive sports devices for children. Dr. Wozow is supporting the project in the testing phase of a new frame runner.

EXTRAMURAL AWARDS & LEADERSHIP ROLES Kelli Chaviano, D.O., was selected to serve the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as an item writer for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation board examination. Additionally, she continued to serve as the co-secretary for the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) Cancer Rehabilitation Member Community and co-chair of the Pediatric Cancer Rehabilitation Committee of the AAPMR. She also served on the Education Committee for the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) and was selected to serve as Chair of the Education Committee for AACPDM for the term September 2022 to September 2023. Drew Davis, M.D., serves on the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as a senior reviewer for the Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine board examination after serving as an item writer for the prior seven years. Erin Swanson, M.D., serves on the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as an item writer for the Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine board examination. Additionally, she continued to serve as the chair of the Pediatrics Priority Group for the Alabama Head Injury Task Force. Cynthia Wozow, D.O. , was selected to serve the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as an item writer for the Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine board examination. Additionally, she continued to serve as an investigator with the Cerebral Palsy Research Network.
