DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM LEADERSHIP Director of Subspecialty Medical Education Ann Klasner, M.D., MPH

Professor in the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine Program Manager of Subspecialty Medical Education Ronda Chandler

DIVERSITY Ongoing Focused Diversity Efforts, which include, but are not limited to, • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) lectures during the Fellow Core Conference • Continued education efforts for the fellowship program directors and coordinators on implicit bias, holistic reviews, and screening and interviewing skills during recruitment • Expanding the Subspecialty Training Experience in Pediatrics (STEP) program to all pediatric fellowships while providing support for a few visiting residents to spend time with their subspecialty of interest. We had two residents visit for the 2023–2024 academic year. • The Fellow Section of the IDEAA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, Advocacy) Council began in October 2023. The IDEAA Council is dedicated to initiatives focused on education, outreach, and recruitment and retention, demonstrating a commitment to fostering knowledge exchange, community engagement and sustained growth within the organization, Birmingham, and the surrounding areas. o Dr. Lece Webb was appointed as the IDEAA Faculty Leader and Mentor. o Dr. Aphton Lane was selected as the IDEAA Fellow Leader. RESEARCH Research and research scholarship are of upmost importance to our pediatric fellowship programs. Research activities are a requirement of the American of Board Pediatrics (ABP) as well as the ACGME, but many of our fellows perform at a level well above the minimum expected requirements. In the UAB Department of Pediatrics, we offer some innovative opportunities and programs to assist our fellows to perform at high levels of research during their fellowship training. A few highlights include: • Annual Pediatric Scholarship Day o Started in 2016, this daylong conference offers fellows the opportunity to present their ongoing research. On average, 50 pediatric presentations are showcased, including presentations by pediatric fellows, pediatric residents, post-docs, medical students and others. In 2023, there were 49 abstracts submitted. Each year there is a keynote speaker who is an integral, active participant during both the platform and poster sessions.
