RECOGNITION & LEADERSHIP ROLES

Shawn Gilbert, M.D., serves as the executive vice chair for the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at Children’s of Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He is also the L. Gwaltney McCollum, Jr. Endowed Chair in Pediatric Orthopaedics. He serves on the instructional course lectures and pediatric program committees for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He also serves on the pediatric orthopaedic global outreach committee of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America and on the leadership committee of the International Perthes Study Group as the IRB/regulatory chair. He serves on the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery’s question writing task force. He was the program chair for the Southern Orthopaedic Association meeting in 2023. Michael Conklin, M.D., is the medical director of the Children’s of Alabama Center for Gait Analysis. He serves on the committee for development of orthopedic guidelines for care of individuals with spina bifida. He serves on the committee for science and publication, National Spina Bifida Patient Registry at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is the co-leader of the Orthopedics and Rehab working group for the NSBPR.

Philip A. Ashley, M.D., is the director of surgical skills for the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at Children’s of Alabama and UAB.

Kevin A. Williams, M.D., is the wellness champion for the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at Children’s of Alabama and UAB. He also serves on the peer review committee.

Lisa Kafchinski, M.D., is the associate program director for the Children’s of Alabama and UAB Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program. She’s also a member of the young supporters board for the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB.

Erin Ransom, M.D., is a curriculum director for the UAB Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship program and also participates in the multidisciplinary brachial plexus clinic.
