2023 Department of Pediatrics Academic Annual Report

TESTICULAR TORSION In testicular torsion, the testicle twists on its blood supply. If testicular torsion is not diagnosed promptly and treated urgently with surgery, the testicle will no longer be viable and will need to be removed. As part of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) pediatric urology group, Dr. Tong was an author on a multi-institutional abstract on opportunities to improve testicular torsion care. This abstract was presented at the annual meeting of the Societies for Pediatric Urology in Houston in September 2023. At Children’s, Dr. Tong is partnering with Dr. Nick Rockwell, the director of the simulation center to create a testicular torsion simulation model and resident education modules to identify signs and symptoms of torsion. This project is currently in the institutional review board (IRB) phase.
