LEADERSHIP EDUCATION IN PEDIATRIC NUTRITION (LEPN) PROGRAM The purpose of the Leadership Education in Pediatric Nutrition (LEPN) program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is to enhance the nutritional status of mothers, children and families through training future and current MCH nutrition professionals to provide care in diverse clinical, community and public health settings, considering the social determinants of health and prioritizing health equity. This is accomplished through providing training to graduate and post-graduate dietitians, which includes stipend support. Training is also provided to other nutrition and health professionals via supervised practice experiences, an annual Pediatric Nutrition Intensive Course and training modules on food insecurity and on various topics of nutrition for children with special needs. Faculty and trainees participate in clinical, community and research activities related to the unique nutritional needs of mothers, infants, children, adolescents and families. Interdisciplinary care focuses on maternal, child and adolescent health and nutrition, including eating disorders, pediatric obesity, maternal obesity and interventions for youth with special needs.
