FEATURED RESEARCH

The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty have important research focus areas, including: : • Disaster preparedness • Injury prevention (research followed by advocacy/interventions) and safety • Quality improvement (QI)

PEDIATRIC DISASTER PREPAREDNESS UAB/Children’s of Alabama is a hub site for the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Administration for Strategic Preparedness & Response (ASPR)-funded G-7 Pediatric Disaster Center housed out of Baylor–Texas Children’s Hospital. Mark Baker, M.D., serves as the principle investigator for this site. This year, we hosted a two-day course on “Disaster Preparedness for the Pediatric Healthcare Professional” that had more than 30 attendees. Dr. Baker and Shea Duerring, M.D., created and recorded educational modules on surge staffing and chemical decontamination for the course and have been delivered nationally through the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX). Children’s of Alabama participated with the Radiation Injury Treatment Network (RITN), the Jefferson County Healthcare Coalition and regional partners in a G-7 hosted virtual tabletop exercise on pediatric radiation mass casualty response. The After-Action Report identified a need for computer-based just-in-time training for hospital emergency staff on identifying and managing acute radiation injuries. Current activities include creation of trained decontamination response teams, patient care pathways and computer-based educational materials related to pediatric chemical, biological, and radiologic exposures and medical decontamination. Dr. Duerring and Andrew Donahue, M.D., are developing a tool kit on pediatric medical decontamination for pre-hospital (EMS) and hospital emergency providers. Plans are to deploy and survey acceptability of the tool kit among Alabama EMS Agency directors. Dr. Baker, Lauren Robinson, M.D., and Dr. Donahue are developing a two-hour tabletop mass casualty exercise for community pediatricians attending the Alabama AAP meeting in April 2024. Dr. Robinson and Jennifer McCain, M.D., will follow the tabletop exercise with a one-hour lecture. Pedatric Emergency Medicine is active in several domains of the HHS HRSA funded Pediatric Pandemic Network. In 2023, in partnership with Dr. Chrystal Rutledge (Critical Care), Shaundra Blakemore, M.D., and Marjorie Lee White, M.D. , offered the virtual Health Equity Simulation to 100+ PPN members as pre-learning for the PPN annual conference. Dr. Donahue is site lead for a PPN multicenter study on the effectiveness of a disaster education curriculum for pediatric residents. Dr. Baker is the UAB representative on the PPN Disaster Steering Committee, the PPN Deployable Assets domain and the Disaster Networking Collaborative. Dr. Duerring
