The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Children’s of Alabama is a Level IV unit with 48 private rooms available for neonates and infants. Our unit houses four ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) rooms, and it is the only unit in the state that provides ECMO for term neonates and dialysis for premature infants.
Neonatology
Patients are referred from other hospitals primarily for surgical and subspecialty care, with diagnoses that include: • Gastroschisis, omphalocele and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) • Multiple congenital anomalies and various genetic syndromes • Neural tube defects and hydrocephalus • Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN) • Renal anomalies and renal failure • Severe Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) Specialized monitoring, investigations and therapies offered at Children’s of Alabama include: • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) • FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing) • Gastrostomy placement • Hemofiltration and Dialysis (Aquadex and Peritoneal Dialysis) • Home ventilation • Intestinal Rehabilitation (IR) program for short gut syndrome • Mandibular distraction surgery • Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) • Neurologically Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA) Ventilation • Neurosurgical procedures such as shunt placements and neural tube defect repair • Polysomnography (sleep study) • Tracheostomy
