Our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit is designated Level 4 by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC), which is the highest level for units specializing in a continuum of care for patients, from seizure evaluations to seizure treatment plans. Patient diagnoses cover a range of problems, including seizure disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, primary muscle diseases, developmental problems and acute encephalopathies. The division provides ambulatory services through general pediatric neurology clinics at Children’s of Alabama. An expanding research program is investigating basic and clinical problems related to epilepsy, child development, genetics and biochemical diseases. Pediatric Epilepsy Program Our Level 4 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit is state-of-the-art, child friendly and accommodates up to 10 patients daily. Treatments for seizures include medications, dietary therapies and surgical interventions when seizures remain poorly controlled. Our epilepsy surgery program is one of the fastest growing in the nation. To advance epilepsy care, we are also actively involved in research in pharmaceutical and neuroimaging/engineering methodologies.
