Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)

Services Provided When a child has suspected sexual assault or sexual abuse, medical exams and additional professional referrals may be necessary. Children’s of Alabama highly trained nurses in the SANE program are experts in these cases. They work with the child in a safe and nurturing environment alongside other medical and legal professionals to provide the best care and assistance for the well-being of the child. These services may include: • Sexually transmitted infections (STI) testing and disease prevention • Pregnancy testing • Emergency contraception • Counseling referrals • Forensic evidence collection • Focused and complete evaluations and evidence • Joint efforts with Law Enforcement Agencies, Department of Human Resources, District Attorneys, and Social Workers to assist in the legal aspect of victim cases
