Pediatric Hospital Medicine provides care to over 5,000 inpatients per year at Children’s of Alabama. Patients served include infants, children

and adolescents that require inpatient care for common acute illnesses and those with more complicated problems, including complex care and technology dependent children, patients with chronic diseases and patients

with multi-organ problems that do not fit well with a specific subspecialty service.

Pediatric Hospital Medicine has strong working relationships with UAB Department of Pediatrics subspecialists and provides inpatient care to patients of the Rheumatology, Dermatology, Allergy/ Immunology, Neurology, Infectious Diseases, Child Abuse and Genetics/ Metabolic Diseases Divisions. In addition, Pediatric Hospital Medicine is often called on to assist in the care of surgical patients with complex medical problems. The Hospital Medicine service maintains 24 hour in-house attending coverage for inpatients and for calls from referring physicians for transfer of patients to Children’s of Alabama or consultations.
