FEATURED RESEARCH The UAB Division of Adolescent Medicine performs transdisciplinary investigations that include behavioral science, interventional and outcomes research, as well as assessments of psychosocial and physiologic changes during growth and development. Specific areas of research include immunizations, improving outcomes for people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), HIV prevention, nutrition research, quality improvement, randomized clinical trials, health disparities and equity, behavioral research, firearm injury prevention research, and adolescent health risk and resiliency research. PEDIATRIC PANDEMIC NETWORK (RPPN) Tamera Coyne-Beasley, M.D., MPH, is the site co-PI for the Pediatric Pandemic Network (PPN). In a cooperative agreement with the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) of HRSA, the PPN’s goal is to prepare for and respond to global health threats and disasters. This has included the coordination, preparation, response and real-time dissemination of equity-focused, evidence-based pediatric and adolescent care. Dr. Coyne-Beasley is a Community Engagement and Health Equity Co-Lead. Heather Austin, Ph.D., serves as psychology faculty. DOSES PROTOCOL 22-0020 STAGE 2 Dr. Coyne-Beasley is the sub-investigator on this study. The purpose of this NIH-funded study is to determine the efficacy, immunogenicity and safety of the mpox vaccine in adolescents age 12 to 18 years old. PATHWAYS TO PREVENTION OF LUTS IN WOMEN: BLADDER HEALTH CLINICAL CENTERS Dr. Coyne-Beasley is a co-investigator on this study. This study participates as a clinical site in the Prevention of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) consortium to lay the foundation for developing and testing of future prevention interventions for LUTS. PREVENTION OF LOWER URINARY TRACT SYMPTOMS (PLUS) Dr. Coyne-Beasley is the co-investigator of this study. This study seeks to understand the impact of voiding and toileting behaviors on bladder health and lower urinary tract symptoms in adolescents and young adults. This study is funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH). HIV CARE AND EDUCATION Samantha Hill, M.D., MPH, served as the PI for Family clinic until July 2023. Claudette Poole, M.D., MPH is the current PI. The Family Clinic provides interdisciplinary comprehensive HIV care to women, infants, children and youth. The clinic is funded by HRSA. Dr. Hill served as the PI of Project ETC: Educate, Test, Connect—HIV Education, Testing and Linkage to Care for High-Risk Negative Individuals. This project provides HIV prevention, education and testing for adolescents and adults through home-based HIV self testing as well as in outpatient substance abuse treatment facilities, residential housing communities and college campuses. This project is sponsored by the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH).
