2025 Children's of Alabmama Community Health Needs Assessment
The Jefferson County Department of Health has made violence prevention its Strategic Issue #1: “Control Gun Violence and Improve Community Safety” and set a goal to reduce gun-related violent injuries by 5% countywide. 43 Community safety for children is also about having a safe, stable home environment. We already noted the rising 10.6 per 1,000 child abuse/neglect rate in Alabama. 44 This indicator, tracked in the Kids Count Data Book, confirms that abuse is a persistent threat. The survey captured this under both “child abuse” as a health issue and indirectly under safety concerns.
