(205) 638-9986

Since 2001, Children’s SANE program has offered skillful care to pediatric and adolescent patients who have suspected sexual assault

or sexual abuse. The mission of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is to meet the needs of the sexual assault survivor by providing immediate, compassionate, culturally sensitive and comprehensive forensic evaluation and treatment by trained, professional nurse experts within the parameters of the State Nurse Practice Act, the SANE standards of International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) and agency policies. Children’s of Alabama Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse with expertise in conducting forensic exams trained to provide wide-range care with compassion to survivors of sexual assault. The program consists of a small team of concerned and passionate nurses with additional training to help start the child’s healing process. They provide the patient a safe environment and ensure the child’s needs are met with complete care. Nurses from our emergency department, inpatient floors, intensive care units (ICU), Nursing Informatics and outpatient clinics volunteer for on-call shifts and provide 24-hour care through Children’s Emergency Department.

SANE is led by Medical Director Kara Huls, M.D., and Program Coordinator Michelle E. Morris, MSN, RN, CNL, NPD-BC.
