Hospital Medicine

In addition to direct patient care, Pediatric Hospital Medicine faculty supervise and teach resident physicians and medical students serving inpatient clerkships. Members of the Division serve leadership roles in medical education at UAB and in graduate medical education for the Department of Pediatrics. Hospitalists also work closely with leaders at Children’s of Alabama to improve functionality of the EMR, enhance the patient experience of care, improve patient safety and promote family-centered care. Pediatric Hospital Medicine also trains hospitalists. A two-year fellowship program started in 2012 was accredited in 2020, when accreditation was first offered. All 12 fellows who have completed the program are currently working as hospitalists in academic pediatric departments/children’s hospitals (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado and Missouri). Research activities of Pediatric Hospital Medicine are aimed at achieving more efficient use of health care resources, developing clinical pathways for specific conditions, measuring and improving quality of care and improving use of evidence-based medicine.
