Evaluation of the Impact of Actions Taken Since the Prior CHNA

In accordance with IRS requirements, Children’s of Alabama evaluated the impact of actions taken to address the significant health needs identified in the immediately preceding CHNA. Since 2023, Children’s focused its Implementation Strategy on three top-ranked health needs: Child and Adolescent Safety, Healthcare Access, and Parent Education, with mental and behavioral health integrated across all priority areas. The following summarizes key actions undertaken and the resulting impacts.

Child and Adolescent Safety

Actions Taken Since the prior CHNA, Children’s of Alabama strengthened and expanded its safety-related infrastructure and partnerships through the Health Education and Safety Center. Key actions included: • Ongoing collaboration with local, state, and national partners such as the Alabama Department of Transportation, Lutzie 43 Foundation, Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, Safe Kids Alabama, City of Birmingham, Jefferson County Department of Public Health, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, and Injury Free Coalition for Kids • Expansion of transportation-related safety education addressing child restraints, seat belt use, pedestrian safety, hot car prevention, ATV safety, and other injury risks. • Periodic School Nurse Workshop Series delivered virtually, significantly expanding statewide reach, along with additional monthly virtual trainings and competency-based education. • Continued growth of Alabama Lifestart (Project ADAM), increasing the number of designated “HeartSafe” schools statewide. • Continued operation and leadership of the Alabama Poison Information Center (APIC), serving as a statewide resource for poison exposure, injury prevention, snakebites, and substance-related incidents.
