Directory of Pediatric Services

2023 2025

Dear Colleague,

At Children’s of Alabama, our team is committed to excellence in everything we do. It’s one of the defining characteristics of the great people who work here. In our Directory of Pediatric Services, you’ll find a listing of the medical professionals on our faculty and staff.

Children’s is one of the largest pediatric medical facilities in the United States and the only health system in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. We believe in family-centered care and offer child life, social services, pastoral care and other programs to help meet patients’ unique needs. We offer inpatient and outpatient services at our Benjamin Russell Campus in Birmingham with additional specialty services provided at Children’s South, Children’s on 3rd Outpatient Center and in Huntsville and Montgomery. Our primary care practices, which serve more than a dozen communities across Alabama, are recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, regularly earning the organization’s Patient Centered Medical Home certification. We also have many clinics that are tailored to specific patients’ needs. In many cases, these clinics offer multidisciplinary care to meet the unique needs of patients with certain conditions. Year after year, Children’s ranks among the top pediatric hospitals in the Southeast, and many of our divisions rank among the nation’s top 50. We’re committed to discovering innovative ways to care for our patients, with researchers who are always working to discover more effective ways to treat them. We’re also focused on bringing in the latest technology to better care for our patients. Our mantra at Children’s is: We Are Here. It’s our way of reminding the public that no matter what’s going on in the world, we won’t stop—the big, red circle in Birmingham’s skyline will keep shining. From our physicians to our nurses to our academic faculty and our staff, We Are Here to care for children in Alabama and beyond. We are proud to make a difference in their lives and in the world of medicine. Please replace any older versions of this directory with this one. You can also find the most up-to-date directory and other resources for referring physicians on the link For Healthcare Professionals at childrensal.org.

About the Directory

This publication is intended to be a quick reference for referring physicians and their staff, providing a general overview of Children’s of Alabama and its specialty care and support services on campus. This directory is not a comprehensive medical staff directory.

This information and more is also available on our website, www.ChildrensAL.org. Many physicians in private practice have privileges at Children’s of Alabama and may be included on the website upon request. The Directory of Pediatric Services is printed biennially by the Children’s of Alabama Strategic Communication and Marketing department. All information has been verified and was accurate at time of printing. Any edits or additions for future editions are welcome and can be directed to Leslie Edmondson at (205) 638-6916 or (205) 638-6660 (main number), or via email to Leslie.Edmondson@childrensal.org.

Children’s of Alabama One Stop assists physicians with all aspects of emergency or inpatient referral—from patient placement/

admissions to consults, transports and transfers.

Referring physicians may also use One Stop to contact Children’s specialists for advice—even when the patient in question is not being seen for an emergency or being considered for admission to Children’s. How does it work? 1. Referring physician calls One Stop using one of the numbers above 2. House Supervisor (HS) obtains information about patient and a direct callback number 3. HS initiates a three-way call with Children’s physician, if needed 4. If decision is made to transfer, HS calls referring facility back with transfer information

Since 2001, Children’s SANE program has offered skillful care to pediatric and adolescent patients who have suspected sexual assault

or sexual abuse. Weight Management

ChildrensAL.org/weight-management

Formerly known as the Children’s Center for Weight Management, the SHINE Clinic is an acronym for Support and Help in Nutrition and Exercise. The name is changed to diminish the stigma associated with obesity, but our goal remains the same: to offer a behavior-based weight management program for children and adolescents. Our multidisciplinary team of pediatricians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, psychologists, dietitians and physical therapists uses a comprehensive approach to weight management. We educate families about the benefits of healthy eating and an active lifestyle with an emphasis on setting realistic goals. With our medical and psychological support, children and families are able to overcome barriers that may get in the way of success.
